Child not able to use the gift amount to buy music

I've given a gift to my child's account, and the amount promptly reflects in the apple id. However when we try to purchase a song the amount gets deducted from my card rather than from the balance on the child's apple id.

Is this normal behavior, if it is then it defeats the purpose of sending the amount as a gift. Very irritating, been trying to figure this out for a while now!

From what you describe, that's odd. There's a few things you cannot purchase with Apple ID balance (Apple isn't super specific as to what they are) but music should work. I would contact Apple and ask what's going on.

So, here's what I found out - and this is still super frustrating, sorry but Apple needs to really sort this stuff out.

  1. Apparently, a child cannot purchase any music with the gift amount. Then why do you even allow a gift to happen in the first place?
  2. So I went ahead and got an apple music subscription as part of my family membership. That too did not help, since she could not download any songs to play offline. So my apple music subscription is useless too.
  3. Then I went ahead and purchased the ONE membership from her account, which seemed to have done the trick and now she is able to download music.

Now all of this took a while to figure out and I just did not expect this from Apple. Can they not make it simpler? Has anyone faced this issue in the past?
