I’m having a problem downloading some apps. The icon is visible with a downward pointing arrow but when I try to download I get a message saying it’s not been able to download. I have capacity on my opad and these are apps I’ve used before such as Microsoft word. What is happening?

Perhaps you're trying to download apps (like MS Word) which require a more recent iOS/iPadOS version (not available on your iPad Air 1st gen which doesn't support iOS versions beyond 12.5.4 because of hardware (CPU/RAM) incompatibility).
