Apple Mailed has suddenly stopped

Apple Mail has suddenly stopped working on my 2 iMacs today. Both are running El Capitan. We have tried everything, but because it suddenly stopped working on 2 independent computers it looks as though Apple have changed something???

The most probable cause has to do with the standard used by your email host.

AOL, Gmail, have better settings on http://mail.aol.com/ and http://www.gmail.com/ which refer to IMAP settings. The built-in host settings when creating a host specific account may not work anymore.

In the last day or two incoming IMAP email has simultaneously stopped (could not connect to p10-imap.mail.me.com) on all my older devices:

iPhone 5s (iOS 9.3.5)

iPad mini (iOS 9.3.5)

Mac Pro (OSX 10.8.2)

as well as on all my mother-in-law's devices (other side of the country):

Macbook Pro (OSX 10.9.5)

iPad 2 (iOS 9.3.5)

iPhone 5s (iOS 8.1)

and also many other people's older devices:
