How can I backup to an external drive

My ipad backs up to icloud. But now my iCloud won’t take that backup anymore the back up is very big and my icloud is full. How can I back up now to an external drive? Is it possible?

You cannot backup your iPad directly to an external drive. What you can do is ➔ Backup your iPad on a computer.
