Read Status of messages not synching to iMac- I have read an old thread- no one seems to be able to solve this. Has anyone found a solution? I have spent hours multiple times with Apple Support and they can't solve

Have no problems there.
Try the following: boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and check again.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

I'm getting the same issue with a Smart Album with the criteria "Message is Unread".
Right now the count is at 30 and holding.
You can try selecting all of the mailboxes in the sidebar and using the Mailbox ➙ Rebuild menu option. Let it run for 10-15 minutes.
Mine is for text messages (imessage), not mail
