Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.


Try these steps for an Intel Mac:

  1. Turn off the Mac.
  2. Turn it on, holding Command + R.
  3. Select Utilities > Terminal.
  4. Type resetpassword
  5. Follow the prompts.



Try these steps for an Apple Silicon Mac:

  1. Shut off the Mac.
  2. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until you see “Loading startup options.”
  3. Click Options, then click Continue. 
  4. Enter the password for an administrator account.
  5. Select Utilities > Terminal.
  6. Type resetpassword
  7. Follow the prompts.
