When searching a folder is there any way to tell the search is running?

When searching a folder is there any way to tell the search is running? While the search is running, nothing displays. If there are no results, nothing displays. Thus it seems like the only visual confirmation of the search will be if it returns results, meaning there is no confirmation if no results are returned?

No, there are no visual confirmations. Usually Spotlight will find your query instantly but if your criteria are more complicated, it will have to run through all your files, with no feedback at how the search is going.
