Updating Mac

I am trying to download microsoft excel from the appstore, but it says "(null) can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because OS X version 10.14 or later is required." When I go to update it it says there is no update though. What do i do?

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and if your MacBook Air is recent enough, click on Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur; it needs to be at least a 2012 one to run the current version of Microsoft Office. Alternatively, switch to a product such as LibreOffice.
