Contact an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider):
They will have the recommended answer, and will likely find just the one you need.

"Thanks for your reply, but I am asking the community because the Apple Authorized Resellers don't handle replacement parts for 2008 laptops. They suggested that I ask the community. I don't need help with an iPhone. It's a large laptop."

Finding Out where to Go:
It's an older device. So, you did you contact your local AASP? Correct? If looking for an extremely-obsolete device, you'd likely have to go third-party. An Apple-brand battery is obsolete (and maybe corroded), being no longer produced by Apple. So, I would recommend you ask the AASP which model to use, and where to get it. There are lots of sites out there. The question is, which is reliable, and trustworthy?

MacBook Pro Battery Replacement Kits - from OWC

Their 'reference model' numbers often are adequate; these can help across several years.
Within each subsection, more identifiers for models are shown; with instructions, tools, etc.
• Upgrades, replacement parts: memory, drives, etc, for your Mac by OWC

Also good source for original Apple power adapters, AC-power 'extension' cables; and more.
And information, resources; online and by phone; a good company (+3 batteries so far, too.)
Yes. I've bought replacement parts, upgrade and new hardware
from their online business; they have global affiliates and a good
reputation; better than most. Already mentioned Three batteries.
And maybe one more to go, in Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13-inch.
And gave my iBook G4 with newertech/nupower battery, to good
friends down the road some miles. Had been refurbished by Apple
and was able to get OWC battery as replacement; when Apple had
nothing to replace their official batteries. ~ Also bought preferred
quality RAM memory upgrade chips; for several models of Mac.
They are among a few better brands to get, for upgrades, OWC.
Like most/all their stuff, guaranteed.
They suggest to calibrate replacement batteries a certain way to
be sure their internal power gauge will be accurate; and it works.
..Later, you can re-calibrate the battery, maybe once a year..!

I've only four Macs now. Unless I count one of the 485+ I repaired
..and donated to charity thrift stores; & persons who needed one.
[I've a PowerMac 7500 w/ Apple display, Apple OS 8.6, and full kit
accessories; plus spare vintage-antique keyboard, mouse; and etc.]
Now just 2 MacBooks (a MB/Pro & one 'first edition') +2 desktop Macs.
Be careful if you choose to replace the battery yourself. Instructions
are good but patience is better. [May help if you haven't much skill,
ASK local certified Apple service, IF they'd install a supplied battery.
I'd learn how, since what else could you do? That's how I do things.]
Some of those have glued-in batteries. With included removal tools,
gloves, instructions, and replacement glue! (With older ones, battery
accessed, by removal of screws.) Not earlier 'easy access' removable.

Yes--exactly right--which of these sites is truly trustworthy. I went to 2 authorized AASPs today, and both said I needed to find it online because it is an older (2008) model. I know what I need, but which dealer is truly reputable? I am hoping that a community member may have experience with buying this online. I need to use this laptop for another year or two. I have several others that are newer, but I need to run a couple of older programs that won't run on my newer devices.

Thanks so much--all of this info is very helpful. We've been using Apples since long before Mac--first was a Lisa, then a 2c, I wish i had all of the old ones.....then Performa with a Colorwriter printer....
Thankfully the Macbook Pro has an easy-to -access and remove battery.
Thanks-- Do you have experience with OWC? Reliable? Good quality battery?
