My MacBook Pro Mid 2012 upgraded with 1tb ssd and 16 gig was working fine with OS Mojave. It suddenly shutdown during a video call and now the screen on powering up has a circle with a line through it.

Disk Utility verifies the startup and main partition fine. When I then do the reinstall OS step I am only given the choice to reinstall Snow Leapord. Why can't I reinstall Mojave? Also will reinstalling the OS delete all of my data ?

I would be very grateful for any suggestions.
