iPhone backups

Connect your phone to your Mac. If it is Mojave or older open iTunes, click on the iPhone icon in the top bar to display the Summary screen for the phone.

If you have Catalina or later open Finder, click on the phone in the sidebar to display the summary screen.

On either Summary screen uncheck Automatically Sync when this phone is connected. Then click Apply.

Backing up requires syncing.

Actually, it doesn’t. Sync and backup are independent of each other. You can do either without the other.
