Voice control not working in Camera

Greetings jimbbpark,

I see you're looking for assistance with Voice Control not taking a photo when you state to turn down or up the volume while in the Camera app, so let's check into this.

When you say the command to turn up or down the volume, do you notice if the volume itself is adjusted at that point, or does the iPhone not recognize the command? If you're uncertain, try saying another command with the Camera app open to see if Voice Control will react to what you state.

If you see that the volume itself is being adjust as opposed to taking a photo, see if you can set up a custom Voice Control command to see if that works. If you need assistance with setting that up, take a look at the following resource:

Having struggled with this for several days on my new iPhone 13 Pro Max and on my wife's new iPhone 13 Pro and finally having called Apple support, I'd like to report on what I've found/learned. Short answer BTW, shut Siri complete off when running Voice Control.

When I first tried Voice Control in my Pro Max, it would perform all commands pretty reliably until I had it open the camera app. Once open, Voice Control would not respond to any Camera Commands. I eventually learned that it, while in the Camera app, (I used Control Center) I turn off and then on again, Voice Control, Voice Control would then perform all the Camera commands I threw at it. If I then said "Go Home", it would but Voice Control would no longer work until I opened Control Center and turned off and on again Voice Control.

When I check my wife's phone, which I did pretty early on, Voice Control worked for everything I tried so I assumed it was something specific to my Pro Max. Then I check my old phone, an XS Max, on which I can't remember previously using Voice Control and discovered it was behaving the same as my new Pro Max. Turns out that my wife has never used Siri and it was/is not turned on her phone. I did NOT turn on Siri on her phone, speculating that I might somehow break it and I don't want to get in trouble with her.

So I called Apple Support assuming there was some setting on my two phones that was causing the issue and that I might have to reset my phone(s) to factory spec. and re set them up from my iCloud backup to, hopefully solve this problem. They were very helpful but the first person I got had to refer to someone else to get an answer. The answer was/is, Voice Control is not compatible with Siri so if you want full functionality of Voice Control, shut Siri off, despite what it says on the Apple Support site which I quote here.

"Here are a few other things you can do with Voice Control

• To turn Voice Control on or off after the initial setup, you can use "Hey Siri," the Accessibility Shortcut, or go to Settings, select Accessibility, then select Voice Control.
• To lock your device, say "Lock scree
• To wake your device, say "Hey Siri, turn on Voice Control."
• To activate listening, you can say "Go to sleep" or "Wake up." The listening feature doesn't turn off, but puts the microphone to sleep until you wake your device with a command."

Hope this all helps. I want to use Voice Control primarily to take photos without having to touch/push on any parts of the phone to avoid any possible camera shake. I'm satisfied that I can do it now but annoyed that I have to switch Siri off and on as needed since I also use that (even more frequently that I would need Voice Control). Hope all this helps.

Observation - Changing the side button selection to Classic Voice Control worked to restore the ability to take pictures via Voice Control, however I noticed the "Hey SirI" command no longer worked. I went to Settings - Siri & Search and found Listen for Hey Siri which had been on, was now off, so I turned it back on. Siri worked properly again but the ability to take pictures with Voice Control stopped once again. Restarted phone numerous times toggling with these two settings but they seem mutually exclusive. JimBBPark - I agree before IOS 15 taking pictures with Voice Control was working fine. I would do a "Hey Siri" Turn on Voice Control and then just say a customized Command I had added to take a picture which was perfect. Under Voice Control you can also set the Overlay title to Item numbers which then allows you to say the number next to an icon for it to execute. You can open the camera app but after IOS 15 saying the the overlay number for the shutter no longer does anything.

You can leave Siri on. As RoysRT's post above suggested, I added "Accessibility Shortcuts" to the Control Center (Settings-Control Center-add Accessibility Shortcuts). Then added "Voice Control" to the Accessibility Shortcut (Settings-Accessibility-General-Accessibility Shortcut)

"Hey Siri open camera"

Open Control Center and tap on the accessibility icon and tap on voice control.

Say "Open Camera"

Say "Turn volume up" or Custom command if you set one up or if you have "Item numbers" selected under Overlay (Settings-Accessibility-Voice Control-Continuous Overlay) you will have a number next to the shutter button and you can say that number.

Say "Go Home" to go back to home screen

"Hey Siri Shut Off Voice Control"

Hopefully someday Apple will restore the way things worked prior to ISO 15 update without this crazy work around.

You are a genius jimbbpark, just about completely fixed. No need to restart phone or keep it on classic voice control.

Settings-Accessibility-Voice Control - toggle ON

Settings-Accessibility-Side Button - select Classic Voice Control

Settings-Accessibility-Side Button - select Siri

And it works and continues to work. For some reason, just toggling back and forth between “Classic Voice Control” and “Siri” makes it work. You can keep it on “Siri” after toggling back and forth. I now open the camera and just say “shoot” and it takes a picture.

I spent a lot of time on the phone with apple tech support, (an actual Accessibility specialist) who finally came to the conclusion that the camera app turns voice control off and was told they knew about the problem but would have to be fixed by a future update. I have been waiting sense the beginning of iOS 15 for a fix and you have done it.

I have spent 4 hours trying to fix my iPhone to take photos with VC.....
