Running ethernet cable to a bedroom in crawl space to Mac

I am running two ethernet lines to two bedrooms. Small home, so fairly easy (except I am old and crawling really hurts). One bedroom on each side with a knee wall crawl space connecting them (easy!)

To avoid crawling (much) I taped ethernet line to a pole and tossed it to other end like a javelin. Ethernet is best laid and not tacked up (this is why you see those metal shelves holding it in industrial settings, I think…). It worked out great.

That one has been running already (for a year or more) to one bedroom. It comes from a downstairs closet with a powered switch in it which then goes to an AirPort Extreme which gets its internet from a DOCIS modem in the basement.

I am about to run the other line. Should I run it direct down to the router or, can I put a switch in the crawl space and run both from the one existing line (essentially a split) for both? This would make it much easier for me…

The existing one was not long enough so I plugged one into the extra I needed using a female/female adaptor. Splitting/switching should be easy as it is ready for it if the f/f adaptor is removed.

Putting a powered switch in crawl space is problem as, no power in that crawl space at all. Not even a light.

Are there “no power needed” switches?

Either plan will work.

The switch will need to be powered. If you cannot provide power for the switch, then you will not be able to install the switch and instead will need to run another separate Ethernet cable from the router to the second location where an Ethernet connection is needed.

The AirPort Extreme has a built-in Ethernet switch with three LAN ports & one WAN port. You can use one of the available LAN ports to connect the second Ethernet line to for this purpose, if I understand what you are trying to do.

This shouldn't pose an issue. Each Ethernet line is limited to around 100m / 300+ ft. Unless you are exceeding this, that would be the only reason to insert a powered Ethernet switch in-line ... instead of the adapter you are currently using.

Did that long ago. Each of the three Airport Extreme LAN ports is feeding three switches. One in first floor study, one in LR, one in home office bedroom.

I think I will try to figure out a way to move that one in office bedroom to the crawl space and run power to it. It would then feed two bedrooms. Direct from Airport Extreme to one switch for those bedrooms (entire upstairs)

We understood that you could not, or did not want to run power to the crawl space, but if you can....that would be a nice solution.

For what it's worth, you can also connect a switch to another switch if you need more ports, or you don't want to change the location of an existing switch.

If you buy a POE powered switch you can easily get a POE injector for a few dollars.

As Bob noted.. splitters on ethernet will reduce speed from 1000mbps to 100mbps..

So don't do that..

Also roof spaces are the worst possible location for electronic equipment in terms of heat and dust etc..

Try and keep stuff in living space and only wires through the crawl space.

As Tesserax noted you can plug switch to switch or even better.. buy a bigger switch. 16 port > 8 port > 5 port.

Switches are dirt cheap these days even for larger 16 port models.

The crawl space is conditioned and insulated. The little door to the knee wall crawl space is right next to a power tap in the bedroom. I will plug in there and run the thin 5 volt power supply wire through door (it can close with the wire into gap) and power the switch that way. The only problem is the line Netgear gives you for the switch to power is only about 3 feet long.

What is a decent 5 volt+ DC Power Extension Cable, Male to Female Power Adapter Cable? Amazon just shows a bunch of Chinese brands and, ratings on Amazon cannot be trusted. A similar extension is often included with security cameras. I have a thousand old and unused cables but, not that one (of course)!

I do not need the switch in the bedroom it was in so, I can put on floor of crawl space where it will feed to both room outlets.

In the end, I ran the second line in the knee wall using the javelin technique but, it was too much a PITA to get the other end (no pole) down the gap of a return duct to the first floor closet (that is how I ran the other bedroom line). So, I plugged the switch in and am running them from that. The switch just sits on the floor of the crawl space. Since I only keep some suitcases in that space, they sit on one side and the router by the door.

Now, the hard part of cutting a level hole for the ethernet wall plate! But otherwise, good enough…
