icloud mail content invisible in 12.0.1

I upgraded to 12.0.1 just a few days ago. Ever since my email 'content' is invisible. Emails are arriving and are visible on my phone, but on my laptop they are invisible. Gmail is fine in both phone and laptop, it's only icloud emails which are affected on the laptop.

I did notice that on the first time I accessed emails after the upgrade it asked me if I wanted to protect mail activity, so I clicked on "yes". Maybe this is the cause? I turned it off in 'Privacy' but to no avail.

I am using Apple's own Mail program.

I deleted some older emails (over 1,000 of them) but then noticed a few hours later they have all come back.

At the bottom left of the Mail screen it keeps on saying "Connecting .... icloud" blinking on and off.

I had exactly the same problem, same symptoms. I deleted my anti-virus (Avast), re-booted and iCloud mail returned to normal. Or you can turn off the AV function in System Prefs > Network.
