Do you have iCloud sync enable on the MBP?

If so, perhaps you'll find that your desktop documents been relocated into iCloud Drive. Check the sidebar of a Finder window for the iCloud icon and click that. (If iCloud is not displayed in the sidebar, select Finder > Preferences and enable iCloud Drive.)
