apple watch won't start after long time unused

I have an Apple Watch Series 1 which has sat in a drawer for a couple of years. I've decided to give it to my 11 year old son but it doesn't want to switch on. When I charge it just the apple logo shows up but never goes beyond this point. I've tried the 10 second hard reset but at best it shows the red message to go to the help page with an exclamation mark.

Is this retrievable or has the battery completed died?

Thanks

John

The battery has completely died. Lion batteries if left in a fully discharged status for a length of time die and can't be brought back to life.

Apple doesn't replace batteries in Apple Watches. They offer, for a fee, a like new (refurbished) replacement which only needs a new battery for $79. Personally, since Apple Watch one is so old and out of date and can't run the newest WatchOS, I wouldn't invest in one, but that's up to you to decide.
