My friend is unable to successfully send me an iMessage but sees blue bubbles after hitting send
I can send iMessages to my friend but see nothing in reply.
my friend is able to send iMessages to all other contacts but me.
have tried turning off iMessage on both phones, restarting the phone and restarting iMessage to no avail.
any suggestions on how to resolve?

That’s exactly what it was, somehow I had blocked my friend’s contact. Once I had them call me and it went straight to VM, I checked the blocked contact setting.
