WhatsApp photos recovery

Hey guys, two years ago, I got an iPhone 7 and I made sure I backed it up esp my whatsapp to my iCloud before I changed to another one which was Xs max. I did restore for my WhatsApp on this xs max but I my chats came back with pictures not visible but showing question marks. Now I don't know what could have led to that but I recently changed to an iPhone 12 and I would love to know if the data I can restore on my WhatsApp on this new phone will come from iPhone 7 which was my first iPhone or it will come from the xs max ? I really need to track down a photo from my iPhone 7 WhatsApp chat

Okay, thanks but there was never an option for back up media

It has always been back up chats (contains both chat and pictures and documents) and then back up video

Just this two options are available on WhatsApp on iPhones and I made sure I backed up chats

Since the WhatsApp backup is a function of the WhatsApp app itself, you’re best off asking WhatsApp support about this.

Probably the problem was that you didn't have the "Include media" option active. That happens when it is not on.

If that was the case, they're gone because they have never been transferred to iCloud in a backup.

You're right, sorry. It's called include video. I pointed to that option because I had the same problem once, this option was not active and I lost all my media, photos, audio and video. Ever since I keep it on and never lost it again.

I as able to restore my chats and pictures just now but it just got back my chats from my immediate previous phone which was Xs max... Is there any way I can make it get up to the iPhone 7 I used before the Xs max?

Probably not. I really think your case is like mine once was, the pictures never got included in the backup, so no way to get them back.

From this point you better go to WhatsApp support to see if they can bring something new to the situation. That's something really not related to Apple.
