I reset my iPhone and now I am locked out

I upgraded from an iPhone 6 to iPhone 11. When I reset the iPhone 6 to factory settings, it reset but now is asking me for my password. My password on that old phone was a 4-digit password but for some reason the password it is asking for is a 6-digit one, so I have no idea what that could be. I tried restoring it from iTunes on my Mac as is suggested but iTunes doesn't even recognize that a phone is connected to the computer when I connect it. I am locked out of the phone for the next hour for too many failed password attempts, and I don't know what to do next.

Did you follow the specific restore steps at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204306

Also try your 4 digit passcode repeated to make it 6 digits. Example it’s 9876 you’ll enter 987698
