Both Apple Mail, and Messages applications allow one to select contiguous and non-contiguous message items and then press the backspace key to delete. Mail won't prompt you after pressing backspace, but the Messages application tosses this dialog after you press the backspace key:

Tested: macOS 11.6.2. Behavior on High Sierra may be different.
