Is there an easy way to copy a photo before editing?

Yes, you can select it and then Image>duplicate.


But are you sure you need to? Photos is a non destructive editor - this means the original photo is always kept, and the edits stored in the database. It is always possible to export the original or edited version, or to remove edits at any time in the future.
