I have tried everything except factory resetting my phone. It was a gift, the previous owner said everything was cleared off the phone. when my boyfriend brought it home, and plugged in it, it had the activation Lock Screen on. Please Help!

You need to contact the prior owner to have them remove the activation lock. Without their help, the phone is useless to you.
