add a contact to a group chat

I have ios 15.1 on my iphone. I want to add a contact to a group chat. The "add contact" option is not available. How do I add a contact?

Maybe the group chat you are having is an SMS/MMS message and not a true iMessage. Or perhaps it is a matter of someone using a non-Apple device. There are a few nuances to know about.
