Macintosh hd and Macintosh hd data

I bougth a second hand iMac.

I have upgraded to the latest version Montery.

I saw the two drives: hdd drive and hdd data

I saw that I installed Montery on the hdd drive; because I saw my home folder and if I would make another user, that user would be added on that drive accordingly.

But on the hdd data drive, I saw the home folder of the previous owner.

I decided

  1. to delete everything
  2. have one single drive
  3. install Mac os Montery on that single drive

But after

  • having these issues with my iMac concerning two drives: Macintosh hd and Macintosh hd data.
  • learning through surfing the web and this discussion site concerning these two drives

I have a question.

how do you create a macintosh hd and especially a Macintosh hd data drive.

or is it ok to have one single drive...nowadays

Those aren't separate physical drives. They're two different volumes on the same drive.

Starting with Catalina, that's how macOS splits the installation of the OS. The regularly named volume is read only, and contains the OS. The same named volume with Data appended to it is where the user accounts and their data go.

In other words, after completely erasing the drive and then installing Monterey, you have exactly what you should. The OS volume, and your user Data volume.
