Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which MacBook Air model you have, click on Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, or Monterey. It needs to be at least a 2012 one to run a newer OS.

Catalina and newer won't run 32-bit software; download and use Go64 to scan for it. To check other programs, click here and look them up.

Hi,

Also, which exact printer make and model is it?

The reason for asking is that some printer manufacturers provide extra software (for setup, ink management, and similar purposes) with higher system requirements than would be needed for printing as such. So, someone here may or may not be able to suggest a solution or workaround that would allow you to use the printer with the existing system (macOS High Sierra 10.13).
