Voice Memo Option in Messages: Why is My iPhone 12 Pro Missing It?

I have an iPhone 12 Pro iOS 15.2.1.

In the Messaging app, I am missing the option to Send/Respond with a voice memo (i.e., the small mic at the right of the textbox).

The mic at the far lower right below the keyboard is for dictation only.

I have turned off iMessage in Settings > Messages > iMessage, so that it would default to SMS. And to no avail, the Voice Memo option is not available.

Does anyone know how to activate the Voice Memo option for the iPhone 12?

For clarification, this is what it should look like...

Apparently, I have been sending SMS/MMS messages (in green) this entire time. I turned on iMessage in Settings and this is still happening. Does anyone know how to fix this?

That would be correct. It is not possible to use the voice message option with an MMS, which is what you get with Android, and that is controlled by your cellular carrier.

I assume that if someone doesn't have an iPhone then my iPhone 12 Pro automatically sends SMS/MMS messages. And when the other person does have an iPhone then the Voice Memo option is active?

You cannot send those types of voice messages to non-iOS devices. In other words, you cannot send them to someone that does not have an iPhone.

Thanks. That's what I suspected. So, the only workaround seems to be using the Voice Memos app to record a Memo, then attaching it via 'Share' to an SMS/MMS message for Android recipients.
