Before I update my OS I want to do a backup to my iCloud account because I do not have an external hard drive. Can I do it? how?

This applies only to an iOS device, and you didn't mention what device you wish to back up - although you posted this to the iCloud on my Mac discussions. If you want to back up your Mac use Time Machine with an external drive.
