Closing Apps on the iPhone 12

To access the app switcher another way: settings > accessibility > touch > assistive touch > toggle on. from there, you can look at the various settings below and change the interactions with the buttons so that you can easily access the app switcher.

Try and Force Restart your iPhone EXACTLY as shown below and see whether that resolves the issue:

• Press and quickly release Volume UP button
• Press and quickly release Volume DOWN button
  • Press and Hold the SIDE button until an Apple logo appears and then release the Side button (Can take up to 20 seconds. (DO NOT release Side Button when invited to Slide Power OFF).

There is generally no reason to do that unless the app in question is misbehaving. Closing out apps that are in suspended status can slow your phone down and use more battery life if the phone has to completely restart the apps rather than unsuspend them.
