Safari keeps going back/reloading previous page

Safari keeps going back to previous page when navigating links from time to time. This was happening on 2020 MBP 16" as well as on my new 2021 M1Max MBP 14". There is no extension installed. This seems to happen both when clicking links quickly or just waiting for a page to load without any action. This keeps happening on more than one page (e.g. reddit, duckduckgo etc.). Any idea what can cause this or how to prevent it from happening? Usually happens at least once an hour.

Go step by step and test.

1. Update Safari, if an update is available. Update may come with bug fixes.

2. Quit Safari, launch Safari holding the Shift key down.

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987

3. Startup in Safe Mode. https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/start-up-your-mac-in-safe-mode-mh21245/mac.

    Quote:

It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility

And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and

the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed.

4. Clear History

    https://support.apple.com/guide/safari/clear-your-browsing-history-sfri47acf5d6/mac

Please read the article before clearing history,

this is like a low level resetting of Safari without affecting passwords and bookmarks.

5. If Safari doesn't open a webpage or isn’t working as expected

I agree with MattForsyth (see reply above). I'm also using Tab Groups, but I feel that this has only been happening in the last two months, whereas I've been using Tab Groups for around 6 months. I go to do something on a new page I've clicked to open and my Mac will quickly take me back, without me touching the keyboard or trackpad. It always goes back one step/page; it doesn't open a completely different page. It happens in any App I'm in - my accounting software, Google search, the start page on my Mac Homepage. I'm running Safari v15.4 on a MacBook Air using macOS Monterey v 12.3.1 and I'm not sure if any updates preceded this issue starting. I can't be sure exactly when it started but my best guess is 2 m. I can go for quite some time without getting so annoyed that I try to find a solution! I'll try upgrading Safari (if there is an upgrade - but I think I'm on auto-upgrade anyhow) but if there's something going on with Safari, Apple ought to be aware of it. There's no error messages or auto-email to Apple when this happens as nothing crashes, and it's normally fixed by repeating my clicking action to take me onto the page I want to get to. But it is annoying - so please fix it if possible Apple! It happens now around 10 times per day, and I'm on my Mac around 4 - 6 hours per day. Thank you!

This all started with the Safari weirdness when I started using tab groups. I have just deleted all of those and hope it works. The other suggestions of doing a quit and such didn't help a thing. When I come to my laptop in the morning, Safari is closed. When I open it, it opens with all home pages. I then open with all windows from previous session, and it opens with a bunch of tabs and windows I tried to close. Hope deleting the tab groups will help this annoying situation!

I read a fix in AppleSupport discussion suggesting it was due to the tab groups. I thought this was a great and helpful idea, so I started using them to round up materials for teaching this summer. THAT is when my problems started. I deleted all my tab groups, saving them to folders first. THEN I reopened Safari with the shift key held down, and all the correct windows and tabs opened. I hope it's fixed now! So far, it looks better than when it was opening with about 12 start pages AND all the OLD windows and tabs I had already closed.
