You have to connect the printer to your wi-fi network first. Then, as a member of the network, your MBP will see it and print to it.

Connect an AirPrint printer to a Wi-Fi network

Your didn't say which printer you have, presumably a recent one, but Canon should have provided some set up instructions and/or a link to their support page if you are struggling with getting it set up.

They all now seem to have touch pads and on-screen commands so it's reasonably self-evident.

You can also get it to sleep after a period - I have set my Canon for the minimum 15 minutes - and to wake when you sent a print job to it by selecting Auto Power On, Both of these are in the printer's Device Settings > Energy Saving Settings option (not the computer). Very useful

Hi,

Would it be correct to assume that your printer is listed in About AirPrint - Apple Support?

You may want to check whether WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) can be used for the basic connection to the Wi-Fi router (if necessary/possible, choose a guide for a similar model):

There is an AirPrint guide from Canon Europe that perhaps could be useful:

Add a printer to your printer list so you can use it on Mac – Apple Support (UK)

Thank you. My printer doesn't have a touch screen. It's supposed to use an app that I couldn't get to work. Guess I will call Canon. Canon doesn't have anything on their website about connecting to a Mac using iOS Monterey. : ( I know this one doesn't use a printer driver, and that's the only set up on their website.
