Can't use Microsoft Word on my macbook

Hi! Now that I have bought a new MacBook Air, my Microsoft products are no longer accessible. I know I can buy a Microsoft 365 subscription to access all of my Word documents that are stored on my computer. Aside from that, what options are there? Are there free options that are Word similar/compatible that I can download without a fee? What does everyone else use?

Thanks!

MacBook Air 13″, OS X 10.11

If the documents aren't overly complex, Pages will handle them just fine, and it's already on your Mac.
