External SSD is read only on my iPad. I can see and open files, but how do I make it so I can add and delete?

Hello all!

I have a brand new iPad Air (4th gen) and a brand new external 1TB solid state drive, which according to the documentation is formatted exFAT.

When I open Files on the iPad, the drive shows as read only, so I can view and open files, but I can’t delete or create new files or folders.

How do I make it so I can add and delete files and folders?

Thanks!

Here’s Apple’s writeup on this topic.

As I understand this writeup, I don’t see any suggestion about a way to write to external devices.
