"Updates" add all the fixes for the same major version. What you need is an UPGRADE.
First make sure you have a current, local, disk-based BACKUP. Major upgrades sometimes have issues, and you could lose your files unless you have a backup. THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL.
You need to install 10.11 El Capitan as a waypoint, to get access to later versions.
To make progress, use the link in this article to Install 10.11 El Captain, ONLY. Then apply all the available updates to 10.11 El Capitan. The last update provides a new version of the Mac App Store, with is REQUIRED to upgrade any farther.
