headphones connection to iPhone X

I got a Lightning connector to headphone jack connector to plug my (telephone-style) headset to my iPhone XR. When I plug the headset in, though, nothing happens. The phone continues to use the built-in speaker.

How do I connect a wired headset to an iPhone?
