The control center on my new IMac says it needs to be updated---need to contact developer. Isn't Apple the developer? Why doesn't the new computer have an updated version?

I think it's saying you need to update the app. Apparently the app is too old to run on your Mac or 32 bit trying to run on a 64 bit only machine.
