How to retrieve deleted contacts?
I deleted an old work email account and lost over 1500 contacts. I tried to restore from iCloud but am unable to retrieve them. Any suggestions

Your work mail account is not necessarily as an Apple ID signed in Mac system preferences , the Apple ID could be signed as example2@icloud.com or other , however the work mail account was added in internet accounts , so the contacts were saved in Mac address book .
When you tried to recover those contacts from iCloud.com 30 days are crossed the contacts are now erased from the server and can't be recovered .
In case if you were using gmail services then also contacts won't be recovered https://support.google.com/contacts/answer/7280886?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop
If you had archived the contacts previously then only they can be found Export or archive contacts in Contacts on Mac - Apple Support
