Free up space on my external hard drive

I have a 2 TB Macbook M1. I back it up every few months onto an external hard drive via Time Machine. Is it safe and possible to erase older back ups (ie back up from 4 months ago) to free up space on the hard drive?

External Time Machine drives should automatically free up space when you are running out. This information can be found at the bottom of this Support page: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support

”The oldest backups are deleted when your backup disk is full.”
