internal mike for garage band on new macbook air

I just purchased a new macbook air and attempted to use garage band to make a single track recording and was unable to have GB recognize the internal mike as an input. I went on system preferences and did the usual steps and was unable to get GB to use the internal mike. Can a MacBook Air be used to make recordings with its own mike, or will I need to connect an outside mike? Thank you for any help.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.2

No, I did not have anything to do with the privacy settings. I will try playing or activating things keeping privacy in mind. I downloaded the latest GB, having just cloned the contents of my Mac Pro yesterday, to see if that helped, to no avail. I will let you know if it gets frisky!
