I understand how to retime stills in FCP X - I select all of my stills in timeline and hit CTRL+D - the browser retime field allows me to input my designated clip time with a numeric like 10.0. for 10 seconds - and then I hit ENTER/RETURN and that is the point where it fails. The clips do not retime - and the timeline needle jumps to the start of the project. What am I missing here? Why is the ENTER key not working correctly?

If you are doing exactly what you say there is probably a glitch with FCP X.
Often these sudden problems can be cured by deleting the preferences.
Shutdown FCP X and re-open it whilst holding down the Option and Command keys.
In the popup window that appears select "Delete Preferences".
Is this a standard QWERTY English keyboard?
If you have Chrome and you have its evil keystone daemons. They kill video applications by hogging the system videotoolbox.
See https://chromeisbad.com for why this is, and how to remove them completely. After removing them you will need to delete and reinstall FCP.
Yeah I'll have to deal with it after this project is finished. I kind of need Chrome for some work things - so losing it all together is not the best solution. I can try to reinstall FCP this weekend and see if that works.
If you need to access sites built for Chrome, I recommend using one of the browsers that are built on the Chrome rendering engine, but do not use the keystone bad actors - Edge, Brave or Opera are examples.
The most damaging are the keystone things. They are supposedly used to, of all things, help keep Chrome up to date, but they are terribly badly programmed. Maybe deleting just the keystone stuff could help. You'd still have to delete and reinstall FCP after that.
Just deleting and reinstalling FCP but keeping the darned things in there will quickly get you back to where you started.
So I deleted Chrome and all the extensions and restarted. Deleted FCP X and reinstalled. Still have this issue. Not sure what the deal is but for whatever reason I can not get images to retime properly and have to drag manually one by one. This project is over but for future projects it will be time consuming unless I can find a fix.
It could have been a corruption in the particular project.
Try creating a new library, a new project, add some stills. Does the same problem occur?

Something's not working right. The shortcut menu with ⌃ D is bringing up the playhead position function ⌃ P.
Latest FCP X - and I have Chrome browser installed but never use it
Hold down Option and Command (not Control).
Thanks - tried it - same issue with RETURN jumping the playhead to the start of the timeline and nothing getting retimed.
Can you post a screenshot of the timeline with the clip selected and the duration display at the bottom of the viewer?
What OS and FCP version are you using? Do you have Chrome installed?
OK so that was it = corrupt project. Stated a new library and everything - tossed a hundred rando images in and now it all works. FFS. Thanks everyone!
