Apple TV on Sony android tv won’t let me purchase or rent through app after recent update

Unfortunately the current policy is to not have in-app transactions for the Apple TV app on Fire TV, Android TV, and Sony TV. I knew about Fire TV for some time, but Android TV/Sony is new for me too.

On Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, and Sony TV devices, you can't purchase content from the Apple TV app. You can buy, rent, or subscribe on another supported device and then watch in the Apple TV app on your Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, or Sony TV device.

The recent loss of the “store” tab on the AppleTV app on Sony Smart TV is very frustrating. It only occurred a week ago.

I have tried a reset and it does not work - the tab is still there on my Mac etc and I can obviously still watch on the TV via the Mac. However, it’s far easier to use another app on the TV - I prefer to stay in the Apple ecosystem.

Will this be resolved and functionality restored…?

The Apple TV app doesn't allow renting or buying on Fire TV or Android/ Google TV. ie Sony TV

The Apple website does mention it, confirmed to me by Apple support Australia and Urquhart1244's first post on this thread. Read it!

The solution is simple, order on your Mac, watch on your Sony Apple TV app.

I just ran into the same problem today April 1st.. prior to today I was able to purchase movies through my Apple app on Sony Bravia tv . Today I decided to rent “marry me” and I couldn’t . It says that I can rent or buy through iPhone or iPad

My Sony TV from the time I bought it was letting me purchase through it to view anything I wanted on AppleTV app. But all of a sudden after having the TV for about 18 months it just stopped working. So, I thought naturally I had done something wrong. But now after reading all your comments I see it’s probably an issue with AppleTV app. It was just so convenient when it was working perfectly through the app itself. Let’s hope they rectify it and make us all happy little Sony customers.

Having the exact same issue with our Sony Bravia TV as well. Wondering if maybe it’s a bug in the app. Very frustrating.

Same issue on Googles Chromecast Gtv. I have all my purchased movies in Apple TV and now can't purchase a movie to add to my library. Hoping it is a bug!

It did last week and has done for over a year. It has suddenly disappeared.

The Apple support site doesn’t mention It - checked just before I posted.

We have this problem. The way I get around it is to make the purchase on my Mac, then get back to the TV app to watch it. It's ham fisted, frustrating and will drive users away from the product.

Well now Amazon is doing the same thing. Last Sony I buy. Next time it will be a Samsung.
