Trying to sort desktop folders

I've been having trouble figuring out how to be able to drag and place folders anywhere I want on my desktop.

I have tried right clicking on my desktop, clicking "Show View Options", opening the drop down menu Sort by and Stack by, and neither of them have the option of "None" or "Snap to grid".

Every other forum I've read said this fixed their issue, but my macbook doesn't even have those options. Any ideas?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

On your desktop, control-click, and select "Sort By" > None.
