Drag/Drop requires 'option' or 'command' key to be depressed?

Brand new MacBook Pro M1, running 12.3.1

Open finder, view set to 'column' mode
Click/hold filename with track pad.
Try to drag/drop.
Nothing happens, other than file preview occurs on right column in finder.
Hold down 'command' or 'option' key, and then drag/drop works as expected.

When did it become necessary to hold down the option or command key for drag/drop to work and how can it be reverted to normal drag/drop behavior. My old MBP running Catalina and every other mac I can recall owning doesn't require this.

It works the way it’s always worked on my M1Mini with original trackpad and Intel MacBook Pro with Magic Trackpad.

There have been sporadic posts with confusion caused by the Force Touch feature on Magic Trackpads. Are you pushing so hard Force Touch is activated?

Barney sir,

i apologize for asking here as I do not know how to contact you directly… i read your reply on using sqlite to read .storedata to recover old/ deleted notes..

i was able to use the sqlite prompt commands to pull out a .txt file, in which i saved as .csv file.

from there i am stuck… i tried to paste a line of “gibbersh” line from the notes7.storedata.html file, but i cannot save it to a separate .html file… please help me.. thank you

My old MBP was a 2012. I see that force touch was introduced in 2015, so it is new to me, and you're correct - I was triggering the force touch feature.
