Setting Up New 2021 MBPro M1 Max and Migration options

I deleted a User Admin, i have had some minor problems. just in my email, my email appears to be inaccessible in TimeMachine and in the Apple Mail App i have access to 99% of my email.

I back up to 5th Gen TimeCapsule from a mid 2012 MBPro.

1) i am concerned with the Migration. if i do 2012 MBPro to 2021 MBPro Migration im afraid if i have some minor issues like the quirky stuff the past couple weeks since i deleted the Admin/ User, that those same issues will be transferred to the 2021 MBPro

OR

2) that my most recent backups will have put those user issues into my TimeCapsule, which then will be transferred to the 2021 MBPro if i Migrate from a backup. I will be choosing the option in green in the image below.

a) will my 2021 MBPro mirror my 2012 MBPro?

b) will this new user have access to everything migrated to the 2021 MBPro?

c) will this user have access to everything in the TimeCapsue or only from the day of Migration?

d) if using the above 1 or 2 would i be moving my issues to the new MBPro??

i am going to choose the option in green replace acct with new user which deletes the old home folder. does this make me loose the access i have on my current MBPro, or will the new account have Admin privileges that i have now??

e) Or should i choose the rename acct. and creating a second home folder and would renaming acct. creating a second user only be necessary to access my TimeCapsule backup the day of and before the day of Migration?

3) Now I am also considering a fresh start. Set up the 2021 like it is my first and i do have any TimeCapsule or PC to migrate from.

then i could move all my documents using HandOff, Download all the apps i want, i store all my photos as documents very little is in iPhoto.

Im not sure how i would move my a) email, or b) MicroSoft Office 2019 with out losing my license, c) move KeyChain/ passwords, d) move what little that is in iPhoto, e) move my safari history, book marks, favorites cant think of anything else of hand that i need.

Also not mentioned i have 2 brand new 5th Gen TimeCapsules in the box new never used never opened. Once my 2021 MBPro is set up i am going to use a New Time capsule to start backing up to.

The HDD drive in my current one has been running steady for 6 years it could be near its end of life. once i am set up with a new TimeCapsule and My 2021 is Backed up to the new TimeCapsule i want factory rest my the used TimeCapsule to factory reset and then back up the 2021 MBPro to it and keep in my safe which is at a different location for emergency restore if my new one got stolen, damaged in a fire or flood.

That was the reason i bought original bought 3 TimeCapsule so i could have Emergency backup in a different location. I do not use cloud services and i do not like the idea.

looking for your Opinion of more knowledgeable people, if you were in my shoes would you

1) Migrate MAC to MAC,

2) Migrate back up from TC

or 3) start fresh manually transfer data.

if i did the 3rd option i would probably have to do that on the phone with an Apple Tech walking me through it, ive had excellent luck doing things i did not understand on the phone with Apple tech for my MBPro and iPhones.

"Finally, the absolute best way to get your new Mac looking like your old one is to restore from a Time Machine backup."

This of course assumes that you want the new Mac to look like the old Mac.....warts and all.

Bob, first i want to thank you for your kindness, time, and patience, i truly appreciate it and i am grateful for your assistance.

i sort of knew some of the answers in this post from all your help, i just wanted to confirm i understand you clearly.

just a note: i won't be backing up the new 2021 MBPro to the old time capsule, it will be connected only once just to Migrate the backup i choose to the new 2021 MBPro. i have 2 new never used still in the box TimeCapsules, i am going to use one for the new 2021 MBPro backups. The old TimeCapsule will be only for the old 2012 MBPro backups, while i am still temporarily using it, possibly the rest of this year, slightly less or longer, i may just carry this old one to work leaving my new one safe at home. i also know i cant access the old TimeCapsules 2012 MBPro backups with the new 2021 MBPro after the set up is complete with a new user and visa versa i cant access the new TimeCapsules 2021 MBPro backups with the old 2012 MBPro.

i really wasn't asking that, i know i probably wasn't clear enough in my questions.

that said i think i am close to all set with what i need to know, i just have 2 small questions regarding your answers and 1 crazy question, LOL.

im sure you know by now my preferred method of setting up the new MBPro. One new user, using the option underlined in green. i will have a new acct, new user and the old acct and old home folder are deleted.

(Lets say all is normal no quirks.) i know and you confirmed, after the Migration process is complete using a backup from the old TimeCapsule to new 2021 MBPro, "my new 2021 MBPro will Mirror the old 2012 MBPro."

1) i am confirming everything that was migrated over from the old TimeCapsule that is accessible on the old 2012 MBPro will be accessible under the new user on the newly migrated to 2021 MBPro?

i realize what is not accessible on the 2012 which is very little, a few emails, will not be accessible even if migrated over to the 2021 MBPro.

also you wrote in one of your answers, i put in italics below:

"If you plan to select a very recent Time Machine backup of the 2012 MBP to Migrate data to the new 2021 MBP, the quirks that are backed up in the current Time Machine backups will be transferred over to the 2021 MPB during the Migration process, so the new 2021 MBP will behave like the 2012 MBP on the date of the Migration."

what im reading seems like you are saying when i get to the step in the image below i can choose from a not so recent backup??, i thought only the most recent backup would show there, nothing else.

2a) are you saying i can choose a not so recent backup say from 3/27/2022 or even further back from the TimeCapsule vs. one from today 4/6/2022 or the day i do the Migration say 4/21/2022?

b) if so will it show up in the step below shown in the image below? or where would i find them earlier back ups?

again i thought the step in the image below would only show the last backup, when you open TimeMachine in preferences it shows a similar image like the image below that says select disk. i dont recall seeing multiple options.

3) another crazy question am i able to go into Migration Assistant to look around and see what is available without activating the process or starting a Migration and back out?

AGAIN I CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH!!

If the 2012 MBP is still acting up, then Time Machine is backing up the 2012 MBP with those same issues.

If you plan to select a very recent Time Machine backup of the 2012 MBP to Migrate data to the new 2021 MBP, the quirks that are backed up in the current Time Machine backups will be transferred over to the 2021 MPB during the Migration process, so the new 2021 MBP will behave like the 2012 MBP on the date of the Migration.

OR 2) that my most recent backups will have put those user issues into my TimeCapsule, which then will be transferred to the 2021 MBPro if i Migrate from a backup. I will be choosing the option in green in the image below.

Same issue. As stated above, if the 2012 MBP is having issues now, then those issues are being backed up currently when you back up using Time Machine. If you use a current Time Machine backup to Migrate data over to the new 2021 MBP, those same issues will appear in the new 2021 MBP after the Migration process has finished.

a) will my 2021 MBPro mirror my 2012 MBPro?

Yes, with the same issues if the 2012 MBP still has them currently.

b) will this new user have access to everything migrated to the 2021 MBPro?

The new user will have the same access as a user does with the current 2012 MBP. If the user of the 2012 MBP does not have access to any data on the current 2012 MBP, then the new user on the 2021 MBP will also not have access to that same data on the new 2021 MBP.

c) will this user have access to everything in the TimeCapsue or only from the day of Migration?

The new user will only have Time Machine access to Time Machine backups that the new 2021 MBP has made. The first Time Machine backup that the new 2021 MBP will make will be after the Migration process has completed. So, if that first Time Machine backup occurs on April 8 for example, the new 2021 MBP will only be able to use Time Machine to access backups that is has made from April 8 going forward.

d) if using the above 1 or 2 would i be moving my issues to the new MBPro??

Yes

i am going to choose the option in green replace acct with new user which deletes the old home folder. does this make me loose the access i have on my current MBPro, or will the new account have Admin privileges that i have now??

The current 2012 MBP will remain unchanged. It will be able to use Time Machine to access backups that the 2012 MBP has made. The current 2012 MBP will not be able to use Time Machine to access any backups that the new 2021 MBP has made. And, the new 2021 MBP will not be able to use Time Machine to access any Time Machine backups that the 2012 MBP has made.

Think of it this way. A given Mac can only use Time Machine to access data in Time Machine backups that the same Mac has made. It's that simple.

e) Or should i choose the rename acct. and creating a second home folder and would renaming acct. creating a second user only be necessary to access my TimeCapsule backup the day of and before the day of Migration?

Do you want one user account on the new 2021 MBP or do you want two or more user accounts? Whether you have only one user account or multiple accounts, you will only be able to use Time Machine on the new 2021 MBP to access Time Machine backups that have made after the completion of the Migration process. No users on the new 2021 MBP will be able to use Time Machine to access any data in Time Machine backups that have been made by the older 2012 MBP.

3) Now I am also considering a fresh start. Set up the 2021 like it is my first and i do have any TimeCapsule or PC to migrate from.

I can't help with any of this because I have not ever done this.

looking for your Opinion of more knowledgeable people, if you were in my shoes would you

1) Migrate MAC to MAC,

2) Migrate back up from TC

or 3) start fresh manually transfer data.

2) Migrate from a Time Machine backup on the TC. I have no experience with 1) or 3). Unless Apple Support has very recently changed their thinking, they would recommend 2) as well, because it is the simplest process.

Finally, you do have 90 days of free phone support from Apple on the new 2021 MBP. It would be wise to get an Apple Support specialist for step by step instructions on the Migration process.

Everything on your old 2012 MBP will be copied over to the new 2021 MBP. But, no one can confirm that everything will run the same on the new MBP because there may some old applications that will not run on a new Mac that is using a new operating system like Monterey or Big Sur.

iPhoto, for example will not run on a newer Mac. The same might be true for any PC applications that you might have installed on the old MBP or old Apple applications that Apple no longer supports. You will need to check with Microsoft regarding any applications like Office to ask about compatibility with new Mac operating systems.

what im reading seems like you are saying when i get to the step in the image below i can choose from a not so recent backup??, i thought only the most recent backup would show there, nothing else.

I was presented with long list of backup dates from which to choose when I last did a Migration about 2 years ago. I cannot say if newer Macs offer the same option. But, don't you want to use the most up to date version of your old Mac to transfer? If you choose an older backup date, then any changes that you have made on the old Mac since that date will not transfer over on the Migration.

3) another crazy question am i able to go into Migration Assistant to look around and see what is available without activating the process or starting a Migration and back out?

No

Please get with an Apple Support product specialist to have them walk you through the Migration process and answer questions as they arise. If there is an additional charge for this, it will be money well spent.

Good luck!

thanks again, i do want the most recent, but if i could get back when i deleted that other admin, or the email i deleted i would go to an older backup the i would airdrop the photos and documents. that is about the only changes i made.

i realize the change in apps and systems apple does, ive got no control over that, it is the one draw back to apple, i dont really use iPhoto, they would be duplicate photos as well. i store all my pictures as jpgs in documents. i did use iPhoto only long ago in 2018 to edit some photos. They must have something in place of iPhoto, im sure they wouldn't make everyones photos obsolete.

i think apple is offering microsoft office in the app store now, i dont think those apps have anything to do with my MS Office, 2019 license. ive recently downloaded the apple apps and it seems they overtook my 2019 MS office, it is way to much to explain here, that is for another post another day. I Know MS has adapted to Big SUR and Monterey. Only time will tell. i replay prefer word over pages and excel over numbers and powerpoint over keynote, MS just offers much more, the apple office are easier to use, apps is so user friendly.

when i did my last migration from TC to the new hard drive in 2018 i dont remember what was there if did i choose my last back up.

bob you've been great you help a lot . thank you very much
