Audio issues

Hi all, I am having some issues with audio on a iPhone XS Max when making phone calls the audio level is low, I have checked settings and all levels are up, I have checked for dust and lint and it’s all clear. When on loudspeaker it sounds fine it’s only when holding the phone to my ear that the audio levels are close to inaudible, anyone have a fix for this or something that I should look out for ?

Thanks in advance

Make an appointment at the Genius Bar. Odds are the speaker grill for the earpiece needs to be cleaned thoroughly.

Recently went through the same thing with my mother. It is a build up of wax and oil in the fine speaker grill. It's not really noticeable when using the speaker phone or playing audio on the speakers. It's definitely noticeable when attempting to talk on the phone normally.
