Fastest method of transferring data to external drive

I have a late model iMac 27in and am looking to backup to a Lacie 8tb drive, as the iMac Disk is nearly full. can i use an Ethernet to transfer data faster to the Lacie external drive with only a USB C access port?

Backup using Time Machine to the LaCie and buy another External Hard Disk such as an OWC Mercury Elite Pro and move large libraries such as your photos, music and movies to the External Hard Disk to free up storage. This is exactly what Apple recommends that you do!!!!

If your LaCie is a HD then that is what the bottleneck is, you would want a SSD if you want the quickest speeds. Even then, be careful and look for the fastest SSD and we don't know the model year iMac you own so we don't know what connections it has to determine what speeds you can get out of it.

Remember any computer will only be as fast as the slowest component connected so you have to be careful if speed is important and no it will not be inexpensive either.
