Does it need to be rendered to playback? Typically Background Render is unchecked and only sections that are FX heavy and can't play in real-time are manually rendered.
Render a portion of your project: In the timeline, select the clip or clips that you want to render, then choose Modify > Render Selection (or press Control-R).

Just submitted feedback via link provided. Has to do with how FCP handles renders of compound clips when there are changes to effects within the compound clip. For example, if you have dissolves between stills in a compound clip, and that compound clip has the Ken Burns affect on it. Then you change when those dissolves happen after the compound clip has auto rendered. Only the dissolves are re-rendered. Which causes jump cuts when you playback the compound clip (Shortest explanation I can give).
Nothing to do with whether background render is checked or unchecked since the bug happens when the compound clip is rendered and then affects within the compound clip are changed. I simply wanted to submit a bug that I found,. I do not need help figuring out how/when I need to render. Thanks.
Just wanted to know the specifics to see if it can be reproduced. Might help other users who encounter the same problem. Often bugs are system or settings specific. I'm assuming this is the current version.
So yes. If you make a compound clip with 3 stills on it. Add some treatments to the stills or whatever you need to do to make them have to be rendered on your gear and put dissolves between the stills. Then make the stills into a compound clip. Add Ken Burns to compound clip and render. Should playback fine after rendering. Now move those dissolves between the stills in the compound clip a second forward/back and re-render (I just had auto render on and let FCP do it automatically). When you playback after rendering you should see the jumps in playback.

I applied color correction to the three clips with dissolves between them. Applied a Ken Burns pull out to the compound. Rendered, though I didn't need to for playback. So far so good. Back in the compound I shortened the three clips. Back in the project, I trimmed off the black end of the compound. Rendered again. No jumps in the playback. I did not at any point render the stills inside the compound. Did you render those first before rendering the compound?
I think by just reducing the size of the clips within the compound clip FCPX can still use the original renders. The original set up you did was correct except maybe to be completely safe add more effects or use higher resolution clips/stills in the test that do require a render (just to be sure it's using the renders). But instead of shortening the clips, just move those transitions forward or backward by 20 or 30 frames. Keep the compound clip the same length. Now back to the project. You'll notice FCPX only wants to render where the transitions changed. Render and playback. What I see now is (I'm guessing) the program reusing the original render up to the points where the transitions changed and then jumping to the new renders..then back to the old render after the changed transition. I appreciate your attention to this. But I probably won't be replying back on a timely basis this week...work work work. :) Also all software/OS is current.
Still can't reproduce it. The problem might be hardware specific as it depends of the system render capabilities. I tried it with more complex effects and a bloom transition rather than cross dissolve.
What's the bug? What version are you in?
Totally appreciate your diligence in bug reporting, thank you. Was just offering a suggestion that could help your workflow if the render behavior was slowing you down.
