Mail retrieval on my iPhone XR is very slow. What settings do I have to modify for the emails to come in in a timely manner?

For which email service provider? If not @icloud.com then check the email settings for the interval between fetching new emails. In the Settings app go to Mail ->Accounts -> Fetch New Data and select from 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or hourly
