whenever i exit out the app and change to a different app for a quick second, instead of staying in the last conversation i was in, it open the messages list instead. i was wondering if there's any way to fix the issue?

Probably you are closing it instead of switching apps.

Switch apps on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

Swipe up from the bottom to the middle of your screen and hold until you can see the App Switcher.
Swipe left or right to find the app you want to use.
Tap the app.
