mail renders new email body blank and source blank also

What in Apple (mac) mail causes new messages to show blank body?

New email arrives via imap. Headers show correctly, but sometimes bodies are (totally) blank. Viewing source shows blank also. Sometimes restarting Mail fixes it. Sometimes viewing some old messages fixes it. Sometimes need to view old messages and also view their source, scrolling through to the end, fixes it.

For any one message, the problem is not permanent, it eventually shows up after flailing about.

Mac mini, 16GB - Macmini7,1 "Late 2014" (had to lie about device)

macOS Monterey 12.4 (21F79)

Mail - Version 16.0 (3696.100.31)

email imap service - AOL (yeah, I know; the price is right)
