Latest IOS update issue with watch 7

Hiya - I have a watch 7. I have tried unsuccessfully to update it today - I updated my iphone first (6S plus), but when I try to do the watch update it says I need to update my phone first, even though when I check the phone update it says I have the latest software.

I have tried:

Hard starting the phone

Unpairing/repairing

Restarting both

Quite irritating as I could do with some of the latest features.

I also have an aversion to things that don't work.

If you're trying to update to WatchOS9 then you need a phone that is running ios16 which is an iphone 8 or higher.
